MONUMENTS AT RISK

IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

 

The Commission to Preserve National Monuments monitors and reviews the state of affairs and activities relating to national monuments at risk from illicit building, inexpert reconstruction, lack of maintenance or other hazards.

 

The Commission also draws up a list of endangered monuments of which emergency protection measures are required to prevent them being completely destroyed. As of May 2005 the list included the 35 most endangered monuments:

 

 

 

1. The Mehmed-paša Sokolović bridge in Višegrad - stability of bridge jeopardized by failure to meet conditions laid down by Commission’s record on technical report on Višegrad hydroelectric generator and illegal operation thereof;

 

2. The Ada Complex in Stolac - demolition of Opijač house within protected ensemble and construction of new building the form and appearance of which is detrimental to the protected ensemble; 
3. The Radimlja site near Stolac - infrastructural and other building works continued in the immediate vicinity of the necropolis on the construction of an industrial and trade zone pursuant to a town planning project which the Law on the Implementation of Decisions of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments  rendered null and void;
4. The old fort in Stolac - illegal erection of 15 crosses, one of which is made of concrete and faced with stone from the walls of the protected fortress;
5. The mediaeval fortress in Jajce - fortifications at risk from lack of maintenance and adverse effects of the weather; 
6. The Resulbegović house, Trebinje - concrete slab laid and sports ground built on site of the protected monument;
7. The Turhan Emin-beg mosque in Ustikolina, Ustikolina, Foča - construction of new building on protected site of a demolished monument, destruction of fragments of the monument;
8. The Ripač archaeological site, Bihać - buildings being erected illegally within the protected site;
9. Orthodox St Nicholas’ Church in Trijebanj, Stolac - architectural ensemble at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;  
10. The Eminagića konak, Tešanj - historic monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration; 
11. The historic core of Blagaj, Mostar - construction of new buildings detrimental to the protected ensemble; 
12. The Šeranić house, Banja Luka - historic monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration; 
13. St George’s Church in Gomiljani, Trebinje - historic monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration; 
14. Soko mosque in Gračanicahistoric monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;

 

15. Sefer-aga mosque in Dabrica, Stolac - historic monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
16. Archaeological site - Korića han Neolithic settlement in Gračanica - buildings being erected illegally within the protected site;
17. Fortress in Kozarac, Prijedor - buildings being erected illegally within the protected site;
18. Town Hall in  Bosanski Novi / Novi Grad- historic monument at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
19. Bužim mediaeval fort in Bužim - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
20. Historic urban area of Kreševo - at risk from demolition of buildings forming part of the group;
21. Archaeological site in Rataje near Miljevina, Foča Municipality - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
22. The old fort of Ljubuški in Ljubuški - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
23. Orthodox Church in Vozuća, Zavidoviči Municipality - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
24.  Ensemble of Mehmed paša Kukavica mosque in Foča (Srbinje) - remains of the architectural ensemble are in poor condition and at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect them from further deterioration;
25. The old fort in Prusac, Donji Vakuf - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
26. Financial building, Jajce - at risk from failure to take urgent steps to protect it from further deterioration;
27. Old town of Koštun (Koštur) in Dabrica, the historic site;

28. Cemetery on Presjeka near Ustikolina, the burial ground, Foča ;

29. The historic site of Kastel fortress in Banja Luka;
30. The movable property of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Livno;
31. Museum collection and Library holdings of the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Ghost, the movable property  ; 
32. Bridge on Žepa river near Rogatica, the historic monument  ;

33. The Mosque in Vitina, Ljubuški Municipality ;

34. Balagija (Balaguša) mosque with burial ground and courtyard, the architectural ensemble, Livno Municipality;

35. Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Nicolas in Srđevići, Gacko Municipality;
36. The historic site - Necropolis with stećak tombstones Delijas, Trnovo
37. The architectural ensemble of the mosque in Kazanci (mosque of the Osman-pasha Kazanac), Gacko
38. The architectural ensemble - Čaršija mosque (Sinan-kadi effendi or Čučkova mosque) in Nevesinje
