Mirzah Fočo, Associate for architectural heritage ensembles and cultural landscapes, took part in the colloquium activities as the representative of the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina, together with a large number of experts – Council of Europe representatives, experts from its member states (15 countries, only the representatives of Turkey and Georgia did not attend), representatives of the governments of Japan, Mexico, NGOs and representatives of the host country.

 

The colloquium activities ran in five plenary sessions as follows:

  1. National, Regional and European Identity as it Appears in Central and Eastern Europe;
  2. Relation of Citizens to Identity and Heritage;
  3. Identity Crises and their Influence Upon Social Cohesion;
  4. Perspectives in the Context of Europe;
  5. Summary.

 The first session, chaired by Mr. Zsolt Jekely, Head of Department in the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Hungary, started after the address of welcome delivered by Dr. Istvan Hiller, Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Hungary and Mr. Daniel Therond, Head of the Council of Europe Department for Culture and Cultural Heritage. Dr. Robert Stradling was the keynote speaker and Mr. Bela Rasky from Austria was the head of the panel discussion held under the name “Historical Aspects of the Feeling of Belonging to Central and Eastern Europe”.

 

The second lecturer, Mr. Petar Turčinović from Croatia, did not attend the session.

Two studies were presented in the first plenary session:

  1. Historical and Social Aspects of Joined Identities in the Region, with special reference to voluntary and violent assimilation – Mr. Robert Turan, Manager of the Jewish Museum in Budapest, and
  2. Identity of European Romanies – Protection of the Original Cultural Values and Tradition in Accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Cultural Convention – Mr. Vasile Ionescu

 Mr. Gabor Boldiszar from the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Education chaired the second plenary session. Professor Dorota Ilczuk was the keynote speaker.

The following panel discussions were presented in the session:

  1. Contents and Meaning of Citizenship and Legal and Ethical Terms, Mr. Carsten Paludan Muller,
  2. The Citizens’ View and Education for a Democratic Citizenship – the Upcoming Tasks in the Region, Mrs. Svetlana Poznyak, Ukraine;
  3. The Role of Folklore Tradition and Social Cohesion and Identity, Mrs. Tatjana Fedorova, Institute for Culture Research, Russia.

 Mrs. Gabriella Szabo-Pap from the Hungarian Ministry of Culture and Education chaired the third plenary session. Mr. Calin Rus from Romania was the keynote speaker.

The following panel discussions were presented in the session:

  1. The Influence of Identity Crisis on Health and Quality of Living, professor Maria Kopp, Semmelweiss University, School of Medicine, Budapest;
  2. Architectural Heritage, Negligence, Destruction, Survival and Rehabilitation, Mr. Borislav Surdić, representative of Serbia in CDPAT;
  3. Integration, Assimilation and Preservation of the Roots of Culture, professor Kosaku Yoshino, Japan.

 Mr. Zsolt Jekely, Head of Department in the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Hungary, chaired the fourth plenary session, while Mr. Jean Petaux was the keynote speaker. The following panel discussion was presented in the session:

 

  1. Dialogue between East and West, Mr. Liuteras Degesys, Lithuania.

 Final comments and summaries of each of the plenary sessions, which will be submitted to the colloquium participators, were presented in the fifth plenary session. Mr. Daniel Therond, representative of the Council of Europe, closed the colloquium activities.

 

The representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina took part in the colloquium activities with the discussion relating to architectural heritage. Apart from the inclination of the Council of Europe towards Bosnia and Herzegovina, a strong support to its European path was expressed again as a comment to the discussion.

 

During the informal part of the colloquium, in the time between the sessions, the representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina met with:

  1. The representative of Japan, professor Kosaku Yoshino, who, apart from being interested in the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, recommended contacts with the Government of Japan – the Nippon organisation that invests in infrastructure modernisation;
  2. Mr. Carsten Paludan Muller, who was interested in the state of the old towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina and who expressed his readiness to start cooperation for their archaeological researches;
  3. The representatives of Serbia and Slovenia,
  4. Mrs. Gabriella Szabo-Pap.
